OPEN THREAD: OCTOBER 2007 FIRE UPDATES
Update: Wed 24 October.
While the weather is improving and the worst seems to be over, many communities are still very much in danger. I'm asking for updates from local congregations and will publish them on the site as they are received. The area map of Anglican churches and ministries on this site can be seen in the Church Finder section of this site. Continue to pray as thousands begin to return to devastation.

(original post from Mon 22 October)
News of what is already being called the worst wildfires ever in San Diego is being widely reported in major channels. This posting is offered as a place to list news, needs, and prayer requests as they become apparent.
Comment on this post or send an email to us at admin@sandiegoanglicans.com. Good news is welcome. We're praying that you and your congregation are ok and would love to share that news with others in the area.
A reminder:
Cell phones, emergency numbers, emergency web sites, freeways, gas stations, schools and businesses are all shutting down in rapid succession. If you are not in danger, please limit cell phone usage (txt msg is best) and do not visit emergency web sites (such as w w w . 2 1 1 s a n d i e g o . o r g ) unless you absolutely need to.
At least 250,000 people have been evacuated in the first morning of this wildfire breakout, and it won't be clear just how much life and property has been lost until the smoke clears.
The Lord be with you.

Via Email: Anne Coletta of http://innocentdoves.blogspot.org (and http://anglicantv.org) posted a few pictures from her Carlsbad home earlier today. She's considering whether to evacuate presently. Her area is in voluntary evac. mode presently.
It's always a tough call, but error on the side of caution, Anne. - DT

Thank you, David, for this sticky.
I live in South Poway and have not yet received an evacuation notice. It's pretty windy and smoky. Areas in North Poway have been evacuated already. Our clergy [Sts. Timothy and Titus] is calling to check on us and to let us know where shelter can be had if need be. It's a great comfort. All members of my family are in safety, for which I give thanks.
I ask for prayers for all first responders, and, of course, for all victims of what is truly an area-wide catastrophe.
Laus Deo,
Elaine Fox
South Fallbrook has been given a mandatory evacuation notice and the rest of Fallbrook has been urged to voluntarily evacuate. The fire crossed I-15 at CA 395 and is heading west.
Fallbrook evacuees are being sent to Orange County Parks through Camp Pendleton.
The Diocese of San Diego has set up an evacuation center at All Saint' Episcopal Church in Vista

In spite of news reports San Marcos is Fine as of 5:45pm today. From Resurrection we had several folks evacuated from San Marcos, Escondido and Fallbrook, including Fr. Tony and Janice Faint, but so far no known loss of property. I was on the fire line and I'm proud to say that the San Marcos Fire Department saved all structures in the Coronado Hills Fire and saved San Elijo Hills... San Marcos Fire Fighters are amazing! I am well, though tired and very smokey... I'll head back out later tonight but for now a little chow, rest and playing with the kids.
I'm in the donations line down at the stadium dropping off tents and sleeping bags. Quite a site. The radio says nearly all of the existing shelters are at capacity with more on alert
If you are in North County and need a place, a reader from Oceanside says they have a queen two twins and a couch to share. Write or call me at 760 580 3970.
A couple updates via email:
The Spearmans from Resurrection San Marcos are watching the fires around them with bags packed. Keep them in your prayers.
The Barnums, also from Resurrection San Marcos, wrote to offer pet hostel for small to medium animals at their Pet Wash in Escondido. Their web site is: http://uwashpet.com/

VCA Animal Hospitals Offers Free Boarding for Pets Affected by Southern California Fires
Monday October 22, 2:57 pm ET

From Fr. Ed Renner at St. John's Fallbrook, via email.

Fr. Don (Kroeger) and Carole voluntarily evacuated yesterday afternoon. They were going to spend time with relatives in Orange County. The Secretary isn’t in this morning and may not come in at all. Fr. Don sent her home yesterday because she was concerned about her animals. I’ve called a few parishioners and got no one, so I’m not sure what is happening.
I just talked to a Parishioner who has a business in Temecula. They believe their house in Fallbrook is OK but, like most people in Fallbrook, they evacuated yesterday afternoon. They described the traffic as a “nightmare.” They finally got out of Fallbrook through DeLuz and then into Temecula, where they spent the night with friends.
On the basis of the fire description on TV, it is believed that at least two parishioners homes may have burned, but that is not certain.
Fallbrook Hospital and Fallbrook Skilled Nursing Facility were both evacuated yesterday as was Silvergate Retirement Residence, an assisted living facility.

Dear All,
The South Bay fire seems to be a couple miles from our subdivision - too
close for comfort, but not a threat for the next few hours at least. The
rest of our congregation seems OK. .... evacuation would be even more difficult than usual for us, our
four dogs, and cat.
I put two umbrellas in the car; please pray for rain.

Austin

Dear Friends in Christ,
We greet you in the precious and holy name of our Savior Jesus Christ! As many of you know, there are a number of wildfires raging across San Diego County. At present nearly (1/2) half to (2/3) two-thirds of our congregation, Sts. Timothy and Titus, have either been evacuated from their homes or are at risk for the same if the winds change suddenly. Praise be to God our loving Father, that as it stands now, no one within our parish family has been hurt and of as yet I have not heard of anyone having lost their home. Likewise, being that we do not own a building we have nothing to fear there--thank God!. I would appreciate your prayers for all of the T&T family as we face these incredible circumstances not without hope but in the very presence and grace of God. Please feel free to call me if you have questions or concerns I am available via cell phone 24 hours a day. That number is 619-302-0621.
We must always remember that no matter what we face, as Christians, we never face it alone but in the loving presence of our sovereign Lord, so that not even the fires of enemy will prevail against us. And we will continue to praise His mighty name in all circumstances! May the Lord bless and keep each of you in His most tender care and mercy.
Your Brother & Servant in Christ,
Russell+

This note was just received from Twyla of Anglican Church of the Resurrection in San Marcos:
We are under a voluntary evacuation order, staying put for now as there is very limited threat right now. Fr. Eric is being very good about following up with families in threatened areas and letting them know if they do need to leave. The Boggios and Procters evacuated yesterday. Fr. Eric said yesterday that the Millers and Ms. Smith had homes that not only were evacuated but under significant threat. I do not know the outcome on those. The Merrikens and Allards are apparently evacuated as of this morning. I'm trying to follow up with some - I know everyone values your prayers :)
I found this on the St. Dunstan's website if anyone needs shelter in that area:
Emergency Shelter at St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church
St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church has opened its Parish House as an emergency shelter for anyone needing a place to stay because of the wildfires. If you have to evacuate your home, or have friends who have done so, you are invited to come to the church for food to eat, a place to spend the night, and spiritual support. In addition to the Parish House being available for those who need it, our chapel will be open for short prayer services at 7.00 am, 12.00 noon, and 5.30 pm throughout this week.
Those who want to contribute food, cots, blankets and sheets to our shelter effort, please bring them to the church office or the Parish hall. If you would like to house someone for a few days, let us know so that we can link you with someone from our sister churches.
If you need spiritual encouragement during this time, read Psalm 46 and Romans 8.31-39.

Another update from the East County .
The Santa Ana winds started to break down around 11AM starting along the coast from the south and moving north and east. This change of winds from the East to a breeze from the West has meant a shift in fire direction. Out in the Potero area ( East County along the border where I was at the Campo Evac Ctr) it caught new fuel and renewed firefighting efforts. Some areas like Jamul the fire turned back on already burnt areas. Spring Valley/Rancho San Diego (Harris fire south east metro) and Mount Palomar have been burning new fuel.
I heard from Karen in Cottonwood along with Muriel (even closer to Steele Canyon ) are now closer to the fire line. Karen emailed around 3pm saying she is ready to evacuate, but doing fine presently. I heard from Muriel late this afternoon. She also is packed. She’ll tell you about the helicopters dipping water out of the lake behind her house on Sunday.
There are over 1000 homes destroyed in San Diego County , folks are starting to get back into evacuated areas. We’ll need you praying during the coming months.
In Christ,

From Fr. Keith Acker, Alpine Anglican, where media coverage isn't as thorough as in some areas.
approx. 9:45 am Wed. See links for very detailed maps of his area.
----------------------
Good Morning!
Santa Ana winds picked up in Alpine about 7am this morning at gust to about 20-25mph. The El Capitan Reservoir still has some hot spots. The west side near the dam hasn’t moved. On the east side the 5am map also showed active fires directly across from the west hot spot (slightly larger area) and then more on the northern shore of the east side bordering the fire front in the Julian path. There is no visible plumb from any of these hot spots or even the Julian front (distance?) from my second story view. Alpine is just off the edge SE from El Capitan (lower right).
http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20071024/images/witch.pdf
The Second area of concern in the Alpine vicinity is the Lyons Valley , a branch from the Jamul part of the Harris fire directly south of Alpine a couple of miles. Very little news from the media. I’m just now seeing the new burn area on the south face above Soane Canyon/Loveland Reservoir a couple of miles south of South Alpine. This seems to be an off shoot of the main part of the Lyons Valley branch.
You can see it more closely if you follow the link. It show both Lyons Valley & Jamul branches.
http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20071024/images/harris.pdf
The Third area of concern is the Jamul branch of the Harris fire. I got an email from Karen just north of 94 and Cottonwood . An 9am tv report said the winds had shifted there to on shore flow and the fire was burning back on burned area. This is over the mountain from Karen and Muriel to the southeast. So they are still on standby.

Noon Wed update from Fr. Acker, Alpine
-------------
The El Capitan Reservoir is no longer a current issue.
Karen reported in from Cottonwood . Immediate danger is decreasing. Jamul still has an active fire front (her son has a house there).
South of Alpine:
1. Barrett Lake is the biggest of the fires (by visual observation) 1298/1313 Thomas Brothers Map.
2. North of Dulzura/Lyons Valley next biggest. 1294
3. Skyline Truck Trail 1293 is the smallest but burning on the slope facing North having crested the hill.
I’ll be heading out to the Campo Substation and the Evac Ctr in a short while.
The fires south of Potrero (Horizon) and a second fire has flared up further east along the border. I’ll know more when I arrive.

We have a family (husband and wife) who appear to be missing. Their only son called us. He knew they evacuated, and knows their house burned. He's called motels, hospitals, etc., and cannot seem to find them. We've contacted a Sheriff's station to see if they can help us locate them.
