For the Dante Book Circle at Holy Trinity Parish
It's been SOOO nice to read Dante this year with fellow believers at the Holy Trinity Sunday night book circle. Nobody doubts it is a classic worthy of our attention and study, but only the chosen can possibly realize it's true vitality and immediacy for those living their lives in Christ.
Dante was an internet unto himself long before anyone dreamed of computers. It's no wonder, given his literary greatness and general omni-intelligence, that several large-scale web projects have been produced. Here is a sample of what's available online to supplement an actual reading of this master.
- Columbia University "Digital Dante" images collection with nicely organized links to the full Dore illustrations and a set by Botticelli: http://dante.ilt.columbia.edu/images/
- The Sublime Princeton Project: http://etcweb.princeton.edu/dante/index.html
- University of Dartmouth Dante Project containing more than 70 (!) commentaries: http://dante.dartmouth.edu/
- No fewer than 27 (!) online editions of the text: http://www.divinecomedy.org/divine_comedy.html
- On that same "Project Elf" site, another comprehensive catalogue of imagery: http://www.divinecomedy.org/divine_comedy.php3?gallery?contents
- An artistic and interactive web-based journey called Danteworlds produced by University of Texas at Austin: http://danteworlds.laits.utexas.edu/
- Modern imagery of the Comedy. Something different anyway: http://www.donaldnewman.com/dante/divinecomedy/index.asp
- Dante Alighieri Get's all Wiki with it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dante_Alighieri
- An Extremely thorough, or at least representative, index of Dante's influence on all thought leaders of popular culture through time spanning Karl Marx through to Pope Benedict XVI and genres from video games and music to architecture and performing arts: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dante_and_his_Divine_Comedy_in_popular_culture
